Revolution Fitness extends members lifespan with Birthday Messaging [Case Study]

Having a good relationship with your members is essential in the fitness world. A great way to build on this relationship is through member touchpoints.

Study shows that 45% of new members will not make it through a whole year. These results are far too low! And as a fitness health manager you need to extend this “honeymoon period” for your members.

To keep your members active, you need to be with them the whole way, not just at the start.

Revolution Preston has noted this and have really impressed us with their member touchpoints. Predominantly in wishing their members a ‘Happy Birthday’!

What this does for the club

  • Builds a strong relationship between manager and member
  • Less likely for them to optout for the occasional marketing message
  • Increases the likelihood for them to refer more members

Diana, the marketing manager at Revolution Preston had this to say when asked a few questions about their retention strategy.

Why did you start sending birthday messages?

Birthday wishes can liven up the day for anyone. Sending birthday greetings to our members is a way to let  them know that we care.

Have you received positive feedback from members?

We sure have, our members often thank us for the birthday text and mention it was thoughtful of us.

Has it benefited the club in any ways you can think of?

I believe it makes our members special, which is always good considering member retention is very important.

And was it easy to implement?

Too easy, it’s automatically sent every day

Why it works
Overall sending out member touchpoints of member ‘Birthday’ messages is a nice gesture that is not hard to implement (especially if you have services like Clubware or any like CRM).

67% of new members get lost and do not use their memberships to the gym. By keeping them connected to the gym will a) remind them to go to the gym and b) make them stick around and become a lifelong member.

Using this tactic is a great way to keep them motivated and feeling connected and comfortable at the gym.

As a general rule, if you look after your members now, they will look after you in the long run by referring new members as they are happy to be a part of a gym with a friendly community vibe.
