The big DO NOT’S in mobile marketing.

At MOBIPOST we have highlighted some awesome work created by you guys in your mobile marketing campaigns. And we never like to be negative, but I thought it’d be worth going over some basic DO NOT’S in mobile marketing.

These are some of the pet peeves, cringe worthy stuff that will make your mobile marketing campaign not nearly as effective as it could be.

Follow these simple DO NOT’S and your mobile campaigns will become more valuable to you as marketers.

DO NOT

In no particular order…
1. Do not make it sound as if it is a mass marketing blast.
Even if you are doing mass marketing, the simple act of inserting their name in the message goes a long way to create personification. Remember, you are sending it to their mobiles, a highly personal device, so make it personal and target your message.

2. Do not try and be too hip.
We know all the young kids are doing it, but writing short hand does becomes a headache. The message you are sending out is a representation of your business. Let’s be professional when marketing.

3. Do not NOT comply with the SPAM laws.
This is a huge one. Not many object in receiving marketing or promotional messages. The times when people get annoyed is where they see there is no opportunity to optout/unsubscribe. Not only does it make you look bad in the eyes of your audience and you lose trust, but there are hefty fines if you get caught.

4. Do not underestimate the importance of having a marketing plan.
What do you want to achieve out of your marketing message? Why are you sending it? When you have a clear idea of why you are sending the message, it will become easier to develop and also track. After tracking, you can then determine what sort of messages work best and for what target audience.

5. Do not type your whole message out in capitals.
Sounds lame but it really does feel like you are being shouted at. If you are going to use capitals, only use it to emphasise the most important part of the message, Eg. CALL NOW, FREE, SAVE, BOOK NOW etc.

6. Do not forget the call of action.
So you have sent out an offer that has high value for your consumer, awesome, but do not forget to instruct them what to do next. Always after the offer tell them what the next step is. Eg. “Call NOW to accept the offer” or “SMS the word ‘YES’ now to take up the promotion” etc. The one’s that work best have a sense of urgency added to them.

7. Do not be inconsiderate to your customer.
Think about the time of day you are sending your reminders or promotional messages. Never do early morning or night time for marketing, this will just annoy your customer. Try doing it around mid-day or after work which is when people are going to be able to act on the offer.

8. Do not over text.
Over texting someone (even in your personal life) gets annoying. For marketing messages, keep it to one campaign a month. But do not be shy to remind them of the campaign that is finishing up. Eg “Last day to get 20% off this months membership”. These messages are a good tool to use to remind people and are always effective to get the last few that have forgotten to act on the message.

9. Do not make the offer complicated.
Why make it hard for your intended target audience? Do not create an offer where there are several variables involved or directs you to sign in on a webpage to gain the offer. Make it simple for your intended market to accept the offer. Eg. Text the word YES to receive the offer. Simple!
